Website Advisory Tip #1:  When you register your domain name make certain it is in your name and not in the name of the web developer.

There are some smooth talkers out there who can give you all types of reasons why they should hold (own) the rights to your domain nameDon't be fooledAvoid loosing the Internet brand power you have developed and the costs associated with getting it back.  We have seen instances where the web developer will secure the rights in their name, charge to develop the site and then in the (second year) when the re-registration is due for renewal will hold you hostage for an unfair amount.  Let your friends and associates know of this tactic too, for the best way to combat this deceitful and unethical practice is to spread awareness of this web development tactic.

This practice extends itself beyond web developers.  If you have an organization make certain the rights are registered to the organization and not to an individual within the organization for if the individual to whom the rights are registered leaves the organization they can in fact takes the rights with them along with all the marketing power that had been developed.

Please help to let the world know that this is the official Bulldog of Central Canada website by posting this link in your websites.

Together we can make the difference - YES WE CAN!

Website Advisory Tip #2:  Don't be deceived into participating in link exchanges that will rob you of your SEO performance.

Operating hundreds of one page websites many of which have achieved top ranking status with the major search engines we often receive requests requesting link exchanges.  "We'll link your (more powerful) website if you will link to our (weaker) website".  As much as it is great to have links pointing to your website we have seen the trend that all of these requests have come from sites that are focused on generating sponsored ad revenues.  In some cases these sites may be dressed up to have text with keywords and phrases to give the appearance of adding value and they may even have a relevant domain name yet when we follow the links on their home page with only a few sponsored ads, we have found the majority of the content in the linked pages are sponsored ads.  Although we have softened our view on sites that have some sponsored ads the ones we would consider would be ones that add value to the consumer - the same consumer our linking site targets as long as it is not in direct competition to what our offering is.  The best tactic is to see how well the site requesting the link exchange does on the major search engines.  We have found that those sites which are focused on generating solely sponsored ad revenues do not perform well in SEO rankings: we are looking for relevant added value content.  In essence their goal is to trick you into giving them your power and minimizing the power you have worked hard to develop.  This is based on the logic principles of the search engine crawlers:  The web crawlers read your site and when they see a link they will visit this site and assign the relevance which will impact your SEO performance.  The one thing about sponsored ads is that the web developer does gives up control of what the content will be.  Even if you see a sponsored ad one with relevance there is no guarantee it will be there the next time the crawler feeds at your site.  A good rule to remember is "If it's too good to be true, it probably is".

Website Advisory Tip #3:  One Way Links may be more effective than Reverse Links.

We believe that one way links are more effective than reverse links.  We do use the reverse link concept yet primarily for our one page website presentations that are interconnected and which form our related portal of websites.  For "external" links we prefer to link to sites that add value to our presentation and to help the responsible community members yet for the most part, unless our site specifically compliments their own site we would prefer that they link to another one of our websites so as to maximize the linking power.  This is not carved in stone as they say yet we are always exploring ways to maximize value for the community.

Website Advisory Tip #4:  Community Web Portals that provide free opportunities to link to your website may also be selling advertising space on your page to your competitors.

Ever go to a Community Web Portal that ranks well for the search term you are exploring and see the company, product, service or information that you are looking for and then also see:  Here are also some competitive or related products.  The problem is once you publish your link it ads value to their presentation for your search category since you no doubt have a website with very relevant data.  When they are able to have many of similiar related and competitive websites in their relevant category they may well be able to surpass your site in the search engine rankings.  Sure it may be great to have the good positioning there as well, yet what happens when they decide to sell sponsored ads in which your competitors participate on the same page as your offering.  For us at Web Consultant On Call we are focused on developing a presentation that encourages individualized attention.  The last thing we want to be marketing is "Here is our great product, but here are some more that you may also want to consider".  Even if the portal may not be doing this now - once they have your site they can tweak their site latter to effect this.  We think there are better ways to get linking power.

Depak Chropra says it wonderfully:  If you want affluence: give affluence.  In this same light if you want link power give link power
